Legal Issues in Sport Administration - KIN 854Instructor: Rick Atkinson
Course Description: This was the first course I took in my quest to earn my Master's of Arts Degree in Education (MAED) at Michigan State. The curriculum presented various legal issues that might face administrators and coaches and how to lead effectively as a sport administrator. One specific assignment presented several pictures of a sport facility with the assignment being to identify potential liability issues and prevent litigation. I also was given three moot court cases to write about from a critical and scholarly perspective, including illegal cuts to athletic budgets based on Title IX regulations. Promoting Positive Youth Development in Sport - KIN 857Instructor: Daniel Gould
Course Description: In this class I learned to distinguish between transactional versus transformational leadership and the effects each can have on youth participation in sport. Additionally, I conducted research on the impacts of youth participation in sport and its importance on one's life development from adolescence to adulthood. This area of study entailed looking at issues surrounding lack of opportunities for high risk demographics, such as kids raised in lower socioeconomic households. Key projects included writing a proposal to fund an after school baseball program, development of athletic budgets and research into the Positive Coaching Alliance and the ideology behind the double-goal coach. Concept of Learning Society - EAD 860Instructor: Steven Wieland
Course Description: In this course, I developed a greater understanding of organizational learning concepts and issues. This was the first of four courses I will have taken while pursuing my MAED that were taught by Steven Wieland, who structures his courses based on a hyperlink format and optional readings that contribute to a different, personalized learning experience personalized for each student's pursuit of learning. The perspective of learning styles evolving based on changing societies was a key theme that has helped expand my leadership strategies and capacity while dealing with a younger, changing workforce in my career field. Physical Bases of Coaching - KIN 856 Instructor: Scott Riewald, Ph.D
Course Description: This course was my only science-based course among the others throughout my MAED program, which primarily featured courses in the arts. The fundamentals of biomechanics were discussed, as was optimal energy systems in strength and conditioning programs and also nutrition and recovery among athletes. The curriculum research was focused on peer-reviewed journals to analyze data related to sport performance was designed to optimize leadership through technical knowledge needed to assist athletes achieve peak results. Key projects included studying UCL injury prevention methods and qualitative analysis of a baseball swing using video software capturing the swing of my 9 year old son as the subject of my report. Concepts of Educational Inquiry - ED 800Instructor: Steven Wieland
Course Description: This course discussed various forms of educational inquiry that help learning happen from differing perspectives. Key projects included studying Howard Gardner's virtues, and the role of the educator to help the student understand the limitations of his early intuitions, particularly applicable to today's challenge of sorting through "fake news" to determine reliable sources of information that leads to learning. Another project I enjoyed was studying historical figures, such as Abraham Lincoln, and their common "pillars" that led to educational evolutions at different times throughout history. Leadership and Organizational Development - EAD 801Instructor: William Arnold
Course Description: The study of organizational dynamics was an interesting facet to this course as I was in the midst of an administration turnover at my agency and specific theories I learned in this course helped me get noticed as I was able to suggest organizational chart changes and secession plans that were vital to how our division's strategic plan is currently being shaped. I gave my new administrator the book "How Stella Saved the Farm", a book on improving organizational dynamics, to help her think through organizational issues she faced upon takeover and she even referred to it in our division retreat held to reshape the way we do business. My promotional opportunity was offered, I believe, in large part due to the principles I learned in this course. Adult Career Development - EAD 864Instructor: Steven Wieland
